Sun Breathing

The first breath that mimics the sun. The only technique capable of incinerating demons from within.

Sun Breathing is the original breathing style from which all other breathing styles in the Demon Slayer Corps are derived. It was created by the first Breath user, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, and serves as the progenitor of techniques such as Water Breathing, Flame Breathing, Thunder Breathing, Stone Breathing, and Wind Breathing. The style is named for its connection to the sun, and it is the only technique capable of inflicting permanent damage on Muzan Kibutsuji.

Key Practitioner (Modern Era)
Tanjiro Kamado

Lore & Background

Centuries of silence buried the original forms as human bodies shattered under the strain of Yoriichi’s movements. Other swordsmen attempted to learn but failed, eventually adapting his fluid motions into Water, Flame, Thunder, Stone, and Wind Breathing. These derivative styles became the standard for the Corps, while Sun Breathing faded into myth—a legend of a swordsman who nearly killed Muzan. It was not until the Taisho era that Tanjiro Kamado, through the ancestral Hinokami Kagura dance and inherited memories, rediscovered and mastered the forgotten forms, proving himself worthy to wield the original power.

In Their Own Story

The air shimmered with unnatural heat as the black blade cut through the night. It was not a slash of wind or fire, but a sudden, blinding flare that mimicked the dawn breaking over a frozen peak. The demon recoiled, its skin hissing and smoking as if struck by direct solar radiation. There was no element to dodge, no shadow to hide in; only the pure, unyielding intensity of the sun, channeled through a single human heartbeat. In that moment, history repeated itself, and the ancient fear returned to the eyes of the demon king.

Reader's Guide

Sun Breathing is the foundational style from which all others were created. Developed by Yoriichi Tsugikuni specifically to counteract demon regeneration, it simulates sunlight through extreme body temperature and rhythmic breathing. The technique demands exceptional physical prowess; users must endure stress that would break lesser swordsmen. The forms include Rising Sun, Clear Blue Sky, Raging Sun, and others, culminating in the thirteenth form—a continuous cycle of the first twelve designed to keep Muzan trapped in a state of perpetual burning. Unlike elemental derivatives focusing on water or fire, this style focuses entirely on solar intensity. This makes it uniquely lethal against demons, as their cells are destroyed by sunlight exposure. The style was nearly lost because subsequent generations could not sustain its physical requirements, branching off into easier but less effective derivative styles. In the modern era, Tanjiro Kamado reconnected with this legacy through the Hinokami Kagura dance passed down by his father. By combining Water Breathing training with these ancestral movements, he unlocked the true potential of Sun Breathing. This revival was crucial to the final battle against Muzan, as it provided the only means to prevent regeneration and ensure his destruction.
