During the final battles against the Demon Slayer Corps, Akaza regains fragments of his past life through intense combat with Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka. He realizes that Kaigaku had abandoned their original ideals by becoming a demon himself to survive. Confronted with the truth that he has become the very thing he swore to fight against, Akaza decides to end his cursed existence before sunrise.

In Their Own Story

The snow fell softly on the battlefield, masking the bloodstains beneath white silence. Akaza stared at his hands, no longer seeing claws of destruction but the trembling fists of a boy who wanted to save people. The sun was rising, a golden threat he had long feared. For the first time in an eternity, he did not fight it. He closed his eyes, whispering an apology to a master who never asked for this sacrifice, and let the light consume him.

Reader's Guide

The arc begins with flashbacks revealing Hakuji's life as a monk's disciple and his pact with Kaigaku. His first major appearance occurs during the Mugen Train incident, where he defeats Rengoku but spares Tanjiro due to his fighting spirit. Later, in the Infinity Castle, Akaza confronts Giyu Tomioka and an injured Tanjiro. The battle triggers his suppressed memories of Hakuji's death and Muzan's betrayal. He recognizes Tanjiro as a descendant of Yoriichi but chooses not to kill him. Finally, as dawn approaches, Akaza activates his Blood Demon Art to destroy himself rather than risk harming the slayers or remaining a demon. His soul is released from Muzan's control and finds rest in the afterlife.
