Demons are former humans who possess supernatural abilities such as enhanced strength, rapid regeneration, and unique powers referred to as 'Blood Demon Arts'. They can only be killed if they are exposed to direct sunlight, decapitated with weapons crafted from an alloy called Nichirin, or injected with a poison extracted from wisteria flowers. The progenitor of all demons is Muzan Kibutsuji, who created them and is responsible for the murder of Tanjiro's family. Muzan maintains absolute control over his demons; he can sense disobedience and instantly kill those who cross his line. The most elite subordinates are the Twelve Kizuki, Muzan's most powerful demons. During the story, Muzan executes all of his remaining Lower Ranks except for Lower One after their failures. Some demons, like Tamayo and Yushiro, have freed themselves from Muzan's control.
