In Their Own Story

The air smelled of aged cedar and dried blood as Tanjiro stepped onto a floor that suddenly tilted into a vertical wall. Above him, the moonlight filtered through paper screens that seemed to stretch forever upward, while below, the roar of battle echoed from a room that had just been miles away. In this impossible geometry, time lost its meaning; one moment he was facing an Upper Rank demon in a narrow hallway, and the next, he found himself falling through a void only to land softly on a tatami mat in a completely different chamber. The castle breathed around them, shifting walls like living flesh, forcing the slayers to adapt instantly or be crushed by the very structure meant to protect the demons.

Reader's Guide

The arc begins when Muzan Kibutsuji retreats into his dimensional stronghold, the Infinity Castle, and traps the Demon Slayer Corps inside. The Demon Slayers are separated and face hordes of Lower Rank-level demons as they search for Muzan and Tamayo. Kagaya's son, Kiriya, and daughters, Kuina and Kanata, lead the operation by mapping the Infinity Castle with the Kasugai crows and locating its inhabitants, with former Hashiras Tengen Uzui and Shinjuro Rengoku standing guard. Key battles include Shinobu Kocho encountering Upper Rank Two Doma, who ultimately kills and consumes her; Zenitsu Agatsuma facing his former senior Kaigaku, the new Upper Rank Six, and killing him with a self-taught Thunder Breathing form; and Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka fighting Upper Rank Three Akaza, successfully beheading him after Tanjiro enters the Transparent World and Selfless State. Despite regenerating his head, Akaza fatally injures himself and stops his regeneration, accepting defeat. Kokushibo and Doma are disappointed by Akaza's death, while the Infinity Castle's owner, Upper Rank Four Nakime, manipulates its layout to confuse the Ubuyashikis. Muzan traps Tamayo in a cocoon of his flesh, remaining confident of his victory over the Demon Slayers.
